What is an affirmation?
Positive affirmations are positive statements that you say to yourself to help shape your beliefs and build confidence. The idea is that by focusing on constructive thoughts, you can reinforce self-confidence, reduce negative self-talk, and motivate yourself toward your goals.

Do affirmations actually work?
By repeating positive phrases, the brain begins to build new neural pathways that support healthier beliefs. Over time, this repetition makes it easier to challenge negative thoughts when they arise. As these neural connections strengthen, the affirmations take on greater personal significance and reinforce a sense of self-worth. Affirmations also play a role in stress reduction and emotional regulation. They can help stimulate the release of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin, which are associated with mood balance and feelings of well-being. Through consistent practice, affirmations not only support a more positive mindset but also foster resilience in managing life’s challenges.
How do I use affirmations?
Reflect on strengths- Take a moment to reflect on your strengths when in a calm state. Think about the things you're good at or what you like about yourself.
Practice writing affirmations- To start, focus on statements starting with "I am _____, I can _____, and I will ____." For example, I am smart, I can do hard things, and I will survive hard things. Write down as many affirmations that come up while reflecting on your strengths.
Look at examples- For help creating your affirmations, look at a strengths list or a list of positive words and highlight the ones that you feel fit for you. You can always ask your loved ones for help, but also try to craft some yourself to practice putting these statements together.
Be gentle with yourself- If it's difficult to think of positive things or things you like about yourself, that is okay! Anything is difficult your first time practicing it, especially if you're in a negative mindset.
Take small steps towards your goal- If you're having difficulty believing your affirmation fully, try a "half-firmation" or trying to take steps towards the affirmation you want to believe. For example, if I am feeling down on my academic success, it might be hard to jump to "I am smart." If this feels to hard to say, try out an affirmation with a similar goal of feelings successful academically, like "I am capable of learning and growing each day" or "I can achieve my academic goals with effort."
Type of practice- Think about how you want to practice one affirmation of your choice from your list, and set a goal or routine for your affirmation. Maybe you write the affirmation on a bright colored sticky note and stick it on your bathroom mirror with the goal to say the affirmation every time you look at the sticky note. Or you plan to say the affirmation aloud or in your head a certain amount of times in the morning and night. There's no wrong way to talk positively to yourself.
Monitor negative thoughts- In making mistakes, try to catch your negative thoughts and replace them with an affirmation when you can. For example, if I drop something, my immediate thought might be "I need to be more careful" or "I'm so careless." Try to catch the negative thought and change it to "everyone makes mistakes" or "I am patient with myself, even in little moments of clumsiness." The more you can challenge negative thoughts and use affirmations, the more you can see the positive outcomes.

Pair affirmations with mindfulness
In addition to daily practice, affirmations are most effective when combined with reflection and self-awareness. Taking a few moments each day to notice your thoughts, emotions, and reactions allows you to better understand patterns that may be holding you back. Pairing affirmations with mindfulness exercises or journaling can deepen their impact, as you become more intentional about redirecting negative self-talk and reinforcing positive beliefs. Over time, this consistent practice can create a lasting shift in perspective, helping you approach challenges with greater confidence, patience, and resilience. By making affirmations a meaningful part of your routine, you are not only nurturing your mindset but also supporting your overall mental and emotional well-being.
